KEZIAH BROWN HANNAN: Daughter of Susannah Terry Brown

As mentioned in the entry on Susannah Terry wife of Thomas Brown of Botetourt Co. Va, the document of 20 April 1818 lists the names of the children and their spouses as of that date.  One was the daughter of Susannah - Keziah Brown.

Keziah is a name from the Bible, one of the three blessings (daughters) given to Job after his time of trials and tribulation - if the suspected connections of the Browns, Terry, and others of the family to Quaker beliefs is upheld - the inclination to use a Biblical name is unsurprising. It need not suggest any connections to people named "Keziah" and since one totally unsubstantiated claim has suggested a mythical early William Terry who married a Keziah (some labeled her Hale) this is helpful to know. It was name found in records of the time period from a dozen or more locations.

Keziah married John Hannan (Hannon or Hannen - it occurs differently depending on who was spelling it on a document with variations). They both sign the document of indenture of bargain of 20 April 1818. Apparently, they moved about 1830 (the oldest son Esom stated that was when he arrived in Boone Co., Missouri, so it is possible he had moved along with a larger family group). There is a John Hannon the 1830 census of Botetourt Co., VA and in 1840 a John Hannon on Parsons Creek, Linn Co., Mo. Keziah, listed as about 4-5 years younger than John, is on the 1850 census same county. ON the 1860 they appear as John Hannon Age71 and Cisier  (poorly spelled version of Keziah) Hannon age 64. Both appear to have died before the 1870 census.

Earlier that year, January 7,1818 one, perhaps her first?, was born, Esom Hannan (1818-1882).  He was named for the father of her husband.  From Find-a-grave: "Esom Hannan was the Son of John & Kezziah (Brown) Hannan. Esom was married to Lucy A. Phillips who married Stephen Lay in Feb. 27, 1845 in Howard county Missouri. Lucy & Stephen had a daughter Cornelia Lay. Esom & Mary Francis Clarkson were married Dec. 12, 1938 in Howard County Missouri. To this union eight children were born. 1. Thomas b. 1839 2. Lucy A. b. 1841, married Zachariah Jones, 3. Elzia b. 1842, married John Brown 4. Susan b. 1844 5. William H. b. 1845 6. Nancy Ellen b. 1846, married Benjamin Jerome 7. Sarah b. Abt. 1848 married John W. Reed 8. Elizabeth Kezziah (Cisarah) b. Oct. 6, 1857 Married Mansfield Jerome Feb. 15, 1883 in Linn County Missouri."

Other children, based on census records, were:

John Jr. 1826-1891 md  Elizabeth?

William 1832-1867 md Lucinda Taylor

Mary Jane 1835- ? md 1) William Tolson 2) Thomas Reed
