'TRAPPER' TERRY, 'DEVIL JET' AND AN 'INDIAN PRINCESS': THE NEED FOR EVIDENCE

One of the most exciting potentials to the DNA was finding out who comprised the rich tapestry of ME. What cultures, ethnicities, and histories went to produce my family? My mother's family, like so many had a tale of a Native American woman in the tree. She was a Choctaw or Cherokee from Tennessee, and was named "Washtella" or "Watella."  The line she was in had a come feature of dark hair and "olive" complexion - so it could be, most mused. Everyone wants to be thought exotic, different, interesting, out of the ordinary - and that often reveals itself in the hunt for ancestors. We often try to compensate for low-self-esteem by seeking reflected glory, notoriety, or uniqueness. That is human nature.

What my DNA found was a faint echo from Asia and the Middleast, a stronger return from the Balkans, and a strong showing of Europe and Great Britain. My mother's DNA did show that strong Asian and Middle-eastern strand and the story came from her line.

So, I understand the need to search and find identity.

Of late, however, there has been an invasion of claims related to my Terry family line that make claims and attach it to every conceivable line in the attempts something will stick.

The only citations are postings on online trees with meaningless quotes and detailed claims. I suspect that this line - if it is real - finds its source in the Terry's who lived in eastern Va and went into NC, AL , SC and etc. DNA will be better able to connect this line to a source and should be pursued vigorously. This page merges Jasper Terry-Mart Hart line with the William to create a William Jasper Terry figure (William "Trapper" Terry + Cheepoake Harris - Our Family Tree (ourfamtree.org) in doing so they identify that the DNA should reflect the I-02 haplogroup if that is a correct link.

A search for "Devil Jet" Miles Terry is explanatory:

  • Find your roots! Find them and share the resources, proofs, etc. that you use to claim one view or another.  I have seen this same connection randomly attached to several other lines - people who were in the region or the time period - and now is the time for the family historians to gather ranks and demand everyone play their "A" game.  Accept nothing with finding some document, source, or record that helps support that view, if you guess, label it as such and provide your reasons for that guess.  Our ancestors deserve no less.
