TERRY FAMILY HISTORY LIST OF IMPORTANT RESOURCES. Marilyn A. Hudson

Note many of these resources, classics and invaluable, are available only in larger or locale specific library or research centers. Search for them using WorldCat to find a location near you. Check with local county pages for researchers willing to do some lookups, copying and how much they would charge to do find the information you seek. Since I am largely focused on the Botetourt County and Montgomery County lines, with their possible links into Bucks County, Pennsylvania, you wills see that bias in materials listed.

Pg. 47, 73, 78 Identify several Terry men connected with Pittsylvania and/or Halifax Co., Va. Joseph, William, Nathanial, Stephen. There is an Edward Hale (Pg.79) as well as a Philip Martin. These Terry men appeared to match the I-01 group of eastern VA and NC.

Botetourt Co.in the American Revolution information notes the heaviest contingent of County men were in the 7^th Regt formed in 1776 (from several counties incl. Albemarle, Botetourt, Orange, Fincastle, etc.).And the 12^th Regt formed in 1777 (Hampshire, Berkeley, Botetourt, Dunmore, etc.) Terry’s listed were : Nathaniel (14^th); Obediah (6^th); Wm Terry (Hampshire Co. under Capt. Ashby); Vincent (7^th, Dunmore Co.); Thomas (3^rd) and John (14^th Regt, Capt. Lambert Dec. 77). Many smaller, county specific militia groups, were not listed.

De La Hunt, Thomas James. Perry County, Indiana History. 1916,1979. 396 p.

Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia.

Lists a John Hart, 1740, Beverly Manor, SE 400 acres. B. 1709 Warminster, Bucks Co., Pa; d. 11 June 1743, Augusta co., Va. He was an older brother of Silas Hart, also of Bucks Co., Pa, and served as a County Justice 1 June 1746.

Elliot, Lula Terry (1903-2000). A partial history of William Terry and his descendants, 1724-1981.

A history touching, briefly, on some assumed history related to William Terry, father of John Terry (Esther Brown) of Perry Co., Indiana and then much on the younger children. Names of those lines include: Terry family, Barger family, Elliott family, Harrison family, Lincoln family, Sandage family, Sullivan family.

History of Gibson County, Indiana. 3 volume set. 1908.

Ingmire, Frances Terry. Terry and Allied Families (- of Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Texas) /compiled by Frances Terry Ingmire. 3 volumes.) Creve Coeur, Mo. : Ingmire, c1976.

Looking at some information about the book, it appears, vol.2 covers primarily the group of eastern (Pittsylvania, Halifax, etc.) Terrys. They appear to share a Haplogroup of I-01, different than that of descendants of John Terry (Esther Brown), son of William and Rachel Terry. Description: "Softcover spiral comb binding, 242 pages, 1983 revised edition of Terry and Allied Families Volume II by Frances Terry Ingmire. The early Terry's were William, Jasper and Josiah arriving in the 1650s in Virginia. Looking at the table of contents different chapters cover: Elijah Terry - Mary Wright, Aaron B. Terry - M.E. Winters - Susan Smith, Martha Terry - William Litteral, Amelia Terry - Abraham Hart, Josiah Terry Jr. - Anney Sowder, William Terry - Jane Winters, David L Terry - Amelia Lawson." Obviously, , with the emphasis on Terry lines originating in eastern Virginia, she was connecting the early (1744) William and Jasper Terry with another, and a different, group.

Notes on volume 1: Including letter collections of sons, Martin and John Terry, and related Reed Family. Notes on volume 2: Including a brief history of our ancestry back to Colonial Virginia.

Letter of 7 April 1852 (pg.22 vol.1): William (1785-1869) and Barbara Ennis Terry of Madison County, Arkansas writing to son John and Lucinda King Reed Terry in Red River County, Texas.

“We had a letter from John Ennes in Indiana this winter and he is living on his old place and doing well but has heard from our friends in Anderson for several years. And we had a letter from brother Josiah in Tennessee last faul and they was well…” [as in the original] John Ennes would have met the brothers William and Miles when they were in Gibson County, Indiana (attested to by early land records) and Anderson was both a reference to the old original county in Tennessee but also the region of early Indiana were Perry County would emerge. The only Josiah on the 1850 census who was in the old Anderson County area out of which Scott County, Tennessee emerged.

So here we have an early letter (1852) attesting to relationships in the Anderson County area of Tennessee (now Scott Co.) and the name of a brother, Josiah.

Terry, pg. 40-42, vol.2. Note, although the photocopy pages I viewed were only pgs 41-42, they were largely records related to eastern Virginia (Halifax, Louisa, and areas associated with the Terry's recorded as coming from New Kent, King William, Spotsylvania, Orange County, etc.)

Dyer, Kenneth L. “William Terry of Botetourt County Virginia.” Terry Family Historian (Nov-Dec 1999) pg. 1-5. [Note this resource is defunct but may be found in some collections]

A treasure of resources, but most significant – for proving relationships - are the Botetourt County, Virginia Court Orders, 1786-1795 for Terry.

1793 Feb. 13, pg. of Order Book 1793-1797: “On motion of Miles Terry by his attorney it is Ordered that, Rachel Terry widow & relict of William Terry deceased, Gasper Terry & William Terry (of Montgomery County) and Thomas Brown & Susannah his wife (of this county) be Summoned, to appear at April Court next to shew Cause (if any they can) why nuncupative will of the Said William Terry deceased Shall not be admitted to Record.” This clearly links a Miles, Rachel, William, Gasper (Jasper), Susannah and another William together as relatives .

1794 March 11 pg. 103: Miles Terry (Plaintff) against Gasper Terry and William Terry (Jr).

1795 May 15,p.238: Upon the Petition of Gasper Terry administrator of William Terry against Samuel Love and William Love the like judgement….

Deeds related to William Terry, deceased included one in Deed Book8, pg. 564: An indenture was made June 13, 1804 between Jasper Terry and Ruth his wife of Montgomery County, Virginia to John Persinger of two parts of “Tract or Parcel of Land lying on waters of Black Run waters of Roaoke in Botetourt Cunty the real estate of William Terry, deceased.” That land was some 400 acres originally included in a patent awarded to William Terry in September 1755 (according to other deeds and documents and the location will appear in other deeds and documents linking individuals). This connects a Jasper Terry with wife Ruth living in Montgomery Co. with William Terry.

A Copy teste Bowyer DC, Botetourt Co VA Deed Book 8,pg.604, shows one John Terry, son of deceased William Terry, using power of attorney through Thomas Brown, to transfer his acres lying on Murrey Run (alias) Black Run a branch of the Roanoke River and being Land whereon William Terry Dec’d (the father of the said John Terry and whereof he died Seized; which said interest in the aforesaid land became vested in the said John Terry as a Joint Legatee to the Estate of his said Father the said William Terry Deed who died Intestate ratifying and conferring whatsoever my said attorney may lawfully do in and about the conveyance…It is noted that John Terry is “of the County of Anderson in the State of Tennessee’ at the time… Witnesses were Elijah McClanahan, James McClanahan, Philip Shatser. At “Botetourt County June 1805.” This proves relationship of William Terry to John Terry, Anderson Co., Tennessee who will move later into Perry County, Indiana.

Botetourt Co. Deed Book 9, pg 554-55 shows similar records indicating a daughter named Mercy married a Jonathan Harrison and they resided in Claiborne Co., State of Tennessee.

Botetourt Co. Deed Book 0, pg. 597 shows the same indicating a daughter named Rachel married a John Martin when Jonathan Harrison purchased Rachel’s share.

As a result of these records, and others, the eight children of William and wife Rachel are: Jasper (with wife Ruth), Miles, William Jr., John, Mercy, Rachel, Susannah, Jemima (who died in 1796 and her husband sold his shares to Jasper Terry).

Family Tree DNA/ Terry Surname Results show that descendants of John Terry (Esther Brown) revealed a Haplogroup of I-02. Those sons were: Haplogroup I - Lineage 02 (I-A10032) and all were presumed descendants of William Terry (1724-1792) and wife Rachel Manson (1730-1804).
