William Oliver Hudson, son of Abner Hudson, Death.

The above image is from the collection of wills in Perry Co., Alabama related to the estate of Abner Hudson. His son, A.G. Hudson, in Perry Co. had been named one of the two administrators (W.O. and A.G.).  This page is a listing of the debts of the estate.

A paragraph below the listing states that  "Sept. 9, 1869....this note was in the possession of W. O. Hudson at his death and his administrator claims that it has been paid...A.G. Hudson"

The last note paid was noted for Nov. 31, 1868. This provides a window of death for Wm Oliver Hudson, son of Abner Hudson, and brother to A.G.Hudson of Perry Co., Alabama.

Note:

Another Wm O. Hudson will emerge in later documents but that is the son of A.G. Hudson and so reference in the 1870's and 1880's are for that Wm Oliver Hudson, named in honor of his uncle.

William Oliver Hudson died probably between the payment of that last debt (Nov. 1868) and the time his father's will (filed in Madison Co., Va. but also probated into court in Perry Co., Alabama) was filed by A.G. Hudson (Dec.1868 and Sept. 1869).  Another small document in the will papers mention one surviving daughter, Aurelia Hudson who will be placed under the guardianship of her grandfather John L. Chambers. After his death another local man, a medical doctor assumes guardianship of her until her marriage there in Perry Co., Alabama.

Since his son, Jack and wife Mary E. Chambers Hudson, also disappear from local records it is assumed that they too died about the same time. A local outbreak of illness might have claimed their lives and might explain the lack of grave site (often if a plague or fever broke out the dead were buried in mass graves making finding them very difficult). In Nov,, of 1869, the father of Mary makes a request to be named administrator of the estate of W.O. Hudson, making it probable that she died sometime before then and attempts were being made to care for Aurelia Hudson.

A TALE OF THREE SILAS HUDSON MEN: GALLOWAY CO., MISSOURI AND HOWARD CO., MISSOURI WITH LINKS TO VIRGINIA

Although the source for the popularity of the name "Silas" at any given time is still unknown, there are three particular men of that name that drew my interest.  Historically, it is believed to be Latin meaning "wood or forest" and stems from the name Silvanus (who accompanied St. Paul).

Three Silas Hudson men include a man from Rappahannock Co., Virginia, one from Culpeper Co., Virginia and one who hailed from a family in Franklin Co., Virginia. The first two are believed to be related and the third appears to hail from an entirely different Hudson group.

Silas B. Hudson, born ca1834, Culpeper Co., Virginia

This man is found on the 1850 census of that county in the home of Moses and Lucy White Hudson. Moses was a son of David Hudson Jr. and wife Elizabeth Gentry Hudson. He is found there as well in the 1860 amid apparent siblings: Lucy D., Valentine, Angeline, Herbert W., Victoria T. and in 1860 a possible wife named Helen. There are records of a Silas Hudson involved in the Civil War and it may be that he used his middle name (Beverly, Burrell, Barnett, Benjamin, and others have been suggested based on other names found in the broader Hudson tree). It is possible he was a causality of that conflict but again, no clear record brings into focus what happened post the 1860 census.

Spouse: Based on the 1860 census possibly a woman named Helene or Helen.

Silas B. Hudson, born July 1834, Rappahannock Co., Virginia

This man is listed on the 1850 census of the county with a Thomas Hudson and a much younger woman (implied wife) named Sarah Hudson. Also, in the home, is a sister named Tennessee E. Hudson This man is in a record for a marriage in Culpeper Co., Virginia (just next door to Rappahannock Co.) to a daughter of a local minister, Martha Ann Read. On the 1860 census, this couple is found in Boone Co., Missouri as a young family including Silas B., Marth, Ida, and Virginia Hudson. Note this 1860 census shows no more Silas in Rappahannock Co., Va but the Silas in Culepper Co., Va is still with the Moses Hudson group. In 1870, an aged Thomas will be found in the home of a married daughter in the county. In 1870 in Howard Co., Missouri the Civil War is over and the family had grown to include Silas, Martha, Lilly, Mary M, and Willie. The family is found the same location in 1880 and 1900 census records. Although no grave has been found for Silas, there is one for Martha in Howard Co., Mo and this line affirms a 1908 death date for Silas B. Hudson.

Spouse: Martha Ann READ
, daughter of Rev. Howard C. Read

Silas S. Hudson , born ca 1823-1827 (records vary), Franklin Co., Virginia

This man was born to James Hudson, son of Grief Hudson, son of Peter and Mourning Griffin Hudson (primarily the Halifax Co., Va areas).  Most records indicate all ten children of James Hudson were born in Franklin Co., Va. He is found on the 1860 Calloway Co., Missouri census and marries there 23 Nov 1869 Ann Alexandria Collier (?). He remains on the census for 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 when he dies on Oct. 6.  His children include Ledru Dean Hudson,, Carl E. Hudson, Mattie Hudson, Stella Hudson, Wm T. Hudson, Lee C. Hudson, E.V. Hudson, Mary Hudson, Albert S. Hudson...  The "S" in the middle name is derived from a death certificate of one of his children. It serves to designate this man among the other Silas Hudson's.

Spouse: Possibly a first wife in the time from 1850 to 1869. 22 Nov. 1869 md Ann Alexandria CALLISON.

DNA BREAKTHROUGH ON HUDSON LINE: William Hudson (b. ca 1827, VA - d. ca 1887, Villa Ridge, Ill)

The "brickwall" that was William Hudson born circa 1827 in Virginia and who died ca 1887 in Pulaski Co., Illinois, married Emily Jane Cain and  had son Louis Hudson, daughter Millie Hudson James and was a step-father to Emily's son, Thomas Benjamin Cain, now has some bricks knocked out and daylight is coming inside the murky places.

A close DNA return between this man and a Silas Beverly Hudson born July 1834 in Virginia and who died in 1908 in Howard Co., Missouri was a key.

I had made his father unknown and took a guess based on other returns that his grandfather was David Hudson Jr and Elizabeth Gentry Hudson.

As a result, both David Jr and his father David Hudson Sr. and wife Keziah Plunkett Hudson, also came up, followed closely by his father Rush Hudson.

Searching through the potential fathers for William ruled out some sons of David Hudson Sr. (for instance William Oliver Hudson who was born 1828 in Culpeper Co., Va and died before 1870 , probably in Perry Co., Alabama based on court records related to his surviving daughter Aurelia Hudson Ogeltree).

I found Silas B. Hudson in several places and it became apparent that there were two Silas B. Hudson's (one was in Missouri at the time the other was still in Culpeper Co., Va.) The Silas B. Hudson in 1850 in Rappahannock Co., Va was a Thomas wife presumed wife Sarah and a daughter named Tennessee E. Hudson. Rappahannock and Culpeper are neighboring counties in the time and several sons of David Hudson had settled there to establish their own large families. Later records indicate that several lines of Hudson will marry 1st to 2nd degree cousins repeatedly over several generations. Many are linked to a specific congregation in Virginia where many found spouses as well.

I suspect that, if the degree of closeness between William and Silas is as close as suggested that there may be a first wife to Thomas or he is the product of another close marriage and his parent or parents died resulting in him being fostered out among other family members or taken elsewhere with other kin. Here is where those with deeper and closer readings on the DNA will need to explore to provide more precise kinship.

I found that one son of David Hudson Sr. was William P. Hudson who went into Ohio Co., Kentucky and named a son Louis or Lewis and another son of David Sr. was Martin Hudson who apparently lived with this son of Wm P. in that local as an elderly man. A young William Hudson, perhaps traveling with these families may have made his way further west, just as Silas will to be in Boone Co., Mo on the 1860 census with a wife and two small children.

BRICKS FALLING FROM A BRICK WALL: ANCESTORS OF WILLIAM HUDSON (C1827-1887), VILLA RIDGE, ILL

Recent DNA results are confirming a link between this man, husband of Emily Jane CAIN HUDSON, father of Louis HUDSON, Millie HUDSON JAMES and step-father of Thomas Benjamin CAIN. He and his family are found on the 1880 Mound City, Pulaski Co., Ill census. He, wife, and son Louis are found on the 1870 census of Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IND. He and Emily married 1868 in that location. On the 1870 census he said he had been born in England. On the 1880 in Virginia. Emily Jane Cain was the daughter of Louis Cain and Melissa "Millie" Greer Carter Cain Sailes Parker. Prior to that marriage his life is a bit murky but may include a stint aboard a ship or life in Kentucky. It is still unclear.

Recent DNA suggests a relationship (brother? cousin?) of William Hudson , father of Louis Hudson and Millie Hudson James of southern Illinois to a Silas Beverly Hudson b. 1834.  He is a possible child of Thomas B. Hudson and wife Sarah of Culpepper Co., Va, or a relative of one Moses Hudson and wife Lucy of the same location. All share a link to David Hudson Jr., according to DNA information, and to his father David Hudson Sr., son of Ruth Hudson.

David Hudson Jr. of Culpepper Co., VA married Elizabeth Gentry. They had the following presumed children (based on documents and wills, etc.):

Abner Hudson (1777-1869/71). Abner md Elizabeth Mason and had children: John Mason Hudson; Albert G. Hudson; Emily Hudson Willis; Sarah F. Hudson Jeffries; William Oliver Hudson (1828-ca1869, AL), he md Mary E. Chambers and had daughter Aurelia Hudson Ogletree and a son "Jack" (or John) who may have died about the time he and his wife died, leaving daughter in care of mother's father; Thurza Hudson, died young, ca 1826?; Mary Ann Hudson Whitehall ;Elizabeth Hudson Tinsley; Robert Hudson, died infancy; Richard Henry Hudson, d1863. Will and other documents pertaining to this family filed in Perry Co., Alabama.

Ezekiel Hudson (1779-1839, SC); md Mary Mason, d/o John and Sallie Mason.

Joel Hudson (1781-1860)

Ambrose

Martha Agnes Hudson (1784, Va)

Moses Hudson (1786)

David Hudson 3rd? (ca1803)

Thomas B. Hudson (1789-1860?). he married Susan Hudson. They may be the parents of Silas B. Hudson. There were several Silas Hudson's: one the son of a James, one the apparent son of a Moses and Lucy Hudson, and the one associated with Thomas and Susan Hudson. Several names (William, Jesse, Louis/Lewis, Elizabeth, Moses, Martin, etc.crop up in the varied lines).

Sorting out the Hudsons: Union Co., Ill circa 1880

A large group of Hudson's can be found on Illinois census records coming from Tennessee. One includes a William Hudson, born about 1825 but in Jackson Co., Tennessee. He is listed in Union County, Illinois, 1880 census with wife Margaret, children Alice C., James M., John R. and Walter Hudson.  This William Hudson dies in 1891 and is buried in Union Co., Il.

Some databases and family trees have found a land record for Union Co., IL and have attempted to link it to the family of another William Hudson who is listed in Mound City, Pulaski Co., IL on that same 1880 census. They are not the same people. The Mound City appears to not have owned any land in Pulaski County and lived in Villa Ridge from about 1886 to 1896.

In addition, the group in Union Co., IL will often flip-flop between a HUDSON and a HUTSON spelling of their name. That, coupled with the Tennessee origins, appear to indicate no connections between the two.
