WORKING TIMELINE OF WILLIAM TERRY (C1724 to 1792), Botetourt Co., Virginia

 Timeline of William Terry (1724-1792):

1724 – Born in VA or PA

1744-  William Terry age  20 and Jasper Terry , age 30?, visit an estate sale on the Monahan place in early December, Botetourt, Virginia, British Colonial America. Others attending are a Henry Brown, and some Harts. William bought a jacket and Jasper bought some silver buttons and “boddies” (may be a term for slaves but might be something else). The Great Wagon Road left Philadelphia and continued on until almost to Roanoke in this time period but travelers and commerce then used the Market Road and the Carolina Road to connect the area Black Mountain. These paths passed very near the site of this sale.

1750 –UNVERIFIED - [A suggested first marriage about 1750 with two children born. It should be noted that ALL birthdates are general range date, most being based on the formula of saying a person had to be 21 years of age to buy land, marry, etc. In reality that was far from the case. In addition, “social contracts” (also known as common law and hand fast marriages were not uncommon. Indeed early journals by traveling ministers of the colonial period often included performing “catch-up” weddings, baptisms, christenings and funerals.]

1750 - Age 26, Constable, Augusta, Virginia, British Colonial America

1750 - In a legal document same county, Wm Terry identified as one neighbor of several...

1753- Age 29, assigned to Surveying and building roads in area of Augusta, Virginia, British Colonial America (future Botetourt Co., area) . Also assigned are Jasper Terry, Miles Hart, Aaron Hart, etc.

1755 – Acquires 40 acres on Black Creek, Botetourt area of Virginia

1756 – A William Terry and an Eleanor Holmes marry, Philadelphia. Suggested, but unlikely based on available information, age 32, No proven connection but in 1756 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, British Colonial America, A William Terry md an Eleanor Holmes; Quaker woman; subsequently all mention of him outside of "Eleanor, wife of William Terry" disappears.

1771 – age 47, William Terry, and wife Rachel grant son Wm Jr, 100 acres on Black Run River, Botetourt Co., VA

1775-1778 – American Revolution, older, William apparently provided horses and provisions to militia and the cause.

1779 – at age 55, Court orders team to inspect road and report back, Botetourt, Virginia, United States. Team: Wm Terry, Jasper Terry and Leonard Huff

1780 – At age 56 (average death age for males was about 40 in that time), William Terry Exempted from paying taxes due to "Age".

 1792 – At age 69, William Terry dies, Botetourt, Virginia, United States, A legal document of Feb 1793 refers to him as deceased and to his “widow Rachel.”
